"It's only words, and words are all I have, to take your heart away." —Bee Gees
For a melodrama, this book does its job well — very melodramatic, though a bit slow at parts. Each character's dilemma is portrayed believably in all its complexities; it was hard for me to decide who to root for, as one side's happiness means devastation for another. The author also skillfully describes life in a small seaside Australian town in the 1920s, where World War I had left an indelible mark on those who survived and those who were left behind.
