Words of a Bibliophile

"It's only words, and words are all I have, to take your heart away." —Bee Gees

The Shadow of the Wind - Carlos Ruiz Zafón I don't love this novel, but I really like it. I like how this is a book about books and book lovers, and there is a book within a book. I think avid readers can appreciate things mentioned in the novel, and there are lots of quotable quotes too. I had a few guesses about the mystery in the storyline; some of them were proven to be correct, others wrong. I think the author did a good job in portraying Barcelona, and even better in describing the terrors during the Spanish civil war. Sometimes there are discrepancies in the story, probably because of the shift in narrators. It took me quite a while to finish the book, but it was more because I was generally not in a good reading mood, and not because of the book itself. It got more exciting as it nears the end – and a satisfying one at that, although some might see it as a cheap trick. Overall, my likes for this book exceed my dislikes.
