"It's only words, and words are all I have, to take your heart away." —Bee Gees
Maybe I was just not in a good reading mood, but this wasn't as gripping as it's hyped up to be. Certainly the author should be applauded for the intricate details about life on a traveling circus in the 1930s. But because the main protagonist Jacob works behind the scenes caring for circus animals, we don't get to see the actual circus performances until the book passes well over the halfway mark. I didn't really connect much to the characters, and the power relations between Jacob and August puzzled me sometimes. The big twist in the story was pretty good though, I didn't see it coming.
