Malice by Keigo Higashino

Malice - Keigo Higashino, Alexander O. Smith

I went into this expecting a quick and enjoyable detective story but unexpectedly found a new favorite out of the Higashino mysteries I've read so far. Usually who committed the murder in his books is not the central problem — and sometimes even quite obvious from the get-go — and the main focus is another aspect such as the how and the why. This novel, featuring Detective Kaga instead of the familiar Professor Yukawa and Detective Kusanagi, is concerned with the why in particular.

Each time I thought I was starting to figure things out, a twist would come and then another. The multiple traps planted within the story challenge what I thought I already understood and ingeniously play with my perceptions about the characters. This stellar piece of literary jigsaw puzzle, served with an observation on the darkness in the human heart, culminate in a jaw-dropping ending which I expect to remember for years to come.
