For the Rose

For the Rose - Akemi Yoshimura I first found out about this series because it was adapted into a Taiwanese TV drama called The Rose. I didn't even watch the drama, but I read the manga when my sister borrowed them from a friend. And boy, was it fascinating. A girl moves in with her estranged mother and half-siblings and as she slowly becomes part of the family she learns more than she ever expected about the family and herself. It's a meditation on beauty (since the girl is kind of an Ugly Betty), self-esteem, parenthood, and most of all love, both familial and romantic. The drawing is not exactly my cup of tea, but I soon forgot about it as the story moved me with just the right mix of drama, romance and comedy. A highly recommended series.
